History can no longer be treated as a passive survey of the past; it is an active and often uncomfortable practice for questioning the present. This event invites educators to examine how histories are constructed, whose perspectives are centred, and how claims of neutrality shape what becomes knowable, teachable, and contestable in the history classroom.
The Gigiishaabawiimin: We Survived Friendship Gathering took place on September 21–22, 2026.
The event brought together Survivors and families, neighbours and friends, project partners, and those who wished to learn more about the Kaatagoging Survivors’ journey to find and tell the truth about the St. Mary’s (Kenora) Indian Residential School.
The event included activities such as sharing journey updates and findings, touring the former school grounds and future memorial site, reviewing archival records and photos, documenting stories and memories, taking boat tours of our lands and waters, feasting and holding ceremony, and reconnecting through evening entertainment.
